Russian race review: 2014

Firstly, I would like to start off by saying how terrible last weeks event was. After what happened to Bianchi, the results became irrelevant. Therefore, I decided not to write an article about it. Bianchi has been in my thoughts all week. I hope we get some good news soon.

Secondly, I want to mention Jolyon Palmer who won the GP2 championship yesterday. I have been supporting him all year since I got into GP2. I expect to see him in F1 next year because that's where he should be. So keep a look out for him!

I was looking forward to today's race. The circuit looks fun to drive, I don't think there is another like it. Qualifying proved interesting with Massa starting down the back of the field and Russian Kyvat starting in 5th.

Today looked promising for so many teams, Torro Rosso, Sauber, McLaren and Mercedes. Only two of them managed to have a good day! Well, Mercedes had a terrific day; winning the constructors championship!

Red Bull and Torro Rosso had a nice battle going on at the start but Vergne and Kvyat did not have the pace today to get in the points. Sauber's plan relied on a safety car which unfortunately for them did not happen. However, Gutierrez did a impressive stint on his tyres and was running in 9th place for a little while. Sutil had a fairly uneventful race. Also, Red Bull just didn't seem to be able to challenge that much today but had both cars in the points.

McLaren finished an impressive 4th and 5th. Their best team result since Australia. I think Magnussen did a good job on the opening laps and was able to make up places after his grid penalty. Button was comfortable in 4th and I'm sure the team will be happy with their performance today. Williams should be pleased with theirs as Bottas achieved 3rd place today. Even though Massa didn't score any points, he still made up a lot of places and shows us some skill today.

Ferrari seem to have a quiet day, managing to get the most out of their car and getting some points for the team. Force India were another team that had a quiet day. They were only able to score 1 point by Perez coming 10th, who was able to keep Massa behind him for a fair bit of the race.

Further down the field, Ericsson who had been impressive over the week was not able beat the Lotus' in the end. However, was the only car out of Caterham and Marussia to finish the race. I do believe Caterham are improving, or at least Ericsson is but reliability still seems to be an issue. Lotus didn't seem to be able to do much today. But, they both kept ahead of Ericsson after his last pit stop.

Rosberg made a mistake in the first lap which caused him to pit and be at the back of the pack but he was determined to get as many points as possible and worked his way to 2nd. I was very impressed. Throughout the year Hamilton had to come from the back of the field and he did that which amazed everyone, and today Rosberg had the chance to show the fans he can do the same. Another 1-2 for Mercedes, well deserved the constructors championship.

Now all we need to know is who is going to win the drivers championship! I am sad to know that there are only 3 more races left. Never the less, I am very excited to see what they bring.
